There have been really great rulers in history. Some of them managed to conquer the world, some of them put an end to violence and put their countries in a period of peace and stability, and some of them changed not only their nations, but the world. Here are history's greatest rulers:
10. Hitler
Yes it is true. The founder of the Nazi party, the man responsible for its mass genocide during World War II, was indeed a great ruler. Germany was in bad times when Hitler came to power, and Hitler was a charismatic leader that Germans could sympathize with. This one man blamed all of Germany's problems on the scapegoat: the Jews living in Germany at the time, and somehow managed to convince the entire German nation that the Jews were indeed to blame for all of Germany's problems. Even if it was a terrible job, it was not a bad job at all, and it required the skill and courage of a great leader.
9. Odysseus
In Greek mythology, Odysseus was the Greek king of Ithaca with such great achievements that he was immortalized in Homer's epic The Odyssey. Odysseus' famous intelligence and cunning complement his powerful fighting skills. During the Trojan War, Odysseus was able to deceive the Trojans by making a wooden horse and hiding his soldiers in it. The Trojans took the horse to their city and walls, and just like that the Greeks passed the impenetrable walls of Troy. Odysseus also managed to reclaim the kingdom of Ithaca after the invasion of selfish tyrants and single-handedly saved his kingdom.
8. Caesar
His reign ushered in an unprecedented period of peace and tranquility known as the Pax Romana, an unprecedented feat. Caesar was able to gain full power, but he didn't have to use any false promises or lies like the rulers before him.
7. Alexander the Great
Known for his brutal and legendary military tactics, Alexander was probably one of the best military commanders of all time. He was certainly one of the most successful, but by then he had conquered much of the world and sometimes surrendered entire cities to him without killing a single person.
6. Joseph II
He was the first ruler of the Austrian dominions of the House of Lorraine. Joseph is probably the most selfless ruler in history. If there is anyone who does not use the phrase "absolute power corrupts absolutely", it is he. He truly wanted the best for his people and even abolished slavery and serfdom.
5. Genghis Khan
Genghis Khan may have been the most brutal leader the world has ever seen, but he was also one of the most successful. He founded the Mongol Empire, one of the most powerful forces in the world at the time. Genghis Khan's brilliant military strategies and tactics land him on this list. During his reign, he conquered most of the world and united many nomadic tribes in Asia.
4. Queen Elizabeth I
Elizabeth I was the queen of England and Ireland from 1558 until her death. She has many nicknames, the most famous being the Virgin Queen, because she was never dependent on the King, but ruled herself very well. Queen Elizabeth I set the example for a female ruler at the time and is probably one of the most successful female rulers in history. Prior to her reign, most women were thought unfit for such power and were secondary to Kings or other male heirs. Elizabeth was able to prove that her gender could adapt and even do better than male rule.
3. Charlemagne
Charlemagne was King of the Franks from 768 until his death. He has a long track record that proves he deserves a place on this list. He expanded and united the Frankish kingdoms into a single, powerful Frankish Empire. His reign is also associated with the Carolingian Renaissance, a period in which art and other cultural creations were revived and reached their peak through the Catholic Church.
2. Napoleon
King Napoleon I of France, later known as Emperor Napoleon, was a prominent military and political leader of France and had a strong influence on European politics in the early 19th century. He dominated mainly continental Europe through superior military tactics and intelligence. It continued to flourish until the French invasion of Russia in 1812, and its success steadily declined. But his creation of the Napoleonic code laid the administrative and judicial foundations for much of Western Europe.
1. Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States and led the country through its greatest civil war, the Civil War. He successfully preserved the alliance; Without Abraham Lincoln, the United States would probably be divided into two countries right now. He also signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which abolished slavery in America. Abraham Lincoln is considered one of the greatest presidents of the United States, if not one of the greatest leaders in history.
